(26 abr. 1718, Providence, R.I., EE.UU.–26 feb. 1802, Providence, R.I.).

Oficial naval estadounidense. Se embarcó a los 20 años de edad y demostró su capacidad como marino y como comerciante. Su matrimonio con la hija de una familia acaudalada lo puso a la cabeza de una numerosa flota mercante, antes de la guerra francesa e india (1754–63); sus actividades de corsario durante aquel conflicto acrecentaron su fortuna y su celebridad naval. En 1775 fue el primer comandante de la Armada Continental. A pesar de tener instrucciones de atacar la flota británica en la bahía de Chesapeake, navegó rumbo a las Bahamas, donde capturó el puesto británico de New Providence. Regresó a Rhode Island, donde la flota permaneció en gran medida inactiva. En 1776, una investigación del congreso culminó en que fue censurado por desobediencia. La inactividad persistente de la flota determinó su suspensión del mando (1777) y su destitución (1778).
